Yes, Please: That Moment When You Give in to the Food Craving

Lately I’ve made several adjustments to my diet in an effort to eat better. Mainly, I stopped being a vegetarian, and have even experimented with a vegan diet, which I quickly decided was something I couldn’t handle.

Before this decision to start eating healthier, I pretty much ate like a little kid, as I always had some kind of snack with me that would probably be more fitting in a child’s lunchbox. Sometimes it would be relatively healthy, like a yogurt or carrot sticks, but most of the time it was those cheese and peanut butter crackers, fruit snacks, or something with chocolate.

Chocolate in any form has always been, and will probably always be my go-to comfort food of choice. Especially dark chocolate. Sweet, but with a kick of the bitterness in the really good stuff makes it appropriate for any number of situations; be it consoling a friend (or yourself) after a bad breakup, celebrating good news, or even just because while watching a movie.

With that being said, I’ve been trying to stay away from the deliciousness that is chocolate lately, because while dark chocolate does have some antioxidants that are beneficial to your health, it’s still not as healthy of a snack as say a piece of fruit. The staying away has been quite hard at times.

Earlier in the week, I discovered what could very well be my new favorite treat, and a compromise between denying the chocolate cravings and enjoying fruit at the same time.

This treat is the frozen chocolate covered banana.

Back when I was in college and worked at a store in one of the many malls around St. Louis, there was an ice cream place that served these, and it would be part of my nightly ritual to stop by for a snack before starting the process of shutting down my store for the night. Sadly, the place went out of business, so it’s been some time since I’ve had the pleasure of one. I’ve tried to make them at home, but somehow they never turned out right.

Places like the fictional Bluth Banana Stand from Arrested Development, and the now closed ice cream place must have some secret trick to make them turn out perfectly every single time.

I was so surprised at making the discovery of ready-made frozen bananas that I had to buy some.

This impulse buy was well worth it, because as soon as I took the first bite of hardened chocolate mixed with a creamy cold banana, it was simply amazing.

I don’t know if I would call it the perfect snack, but it finding it definitely made my day. Finally, I felt like my worst food habit was available in an almost healthy form.

Sure, it may look a little strange to eat, but being able to give in to that food craving and not feel guilty was awesome.

Every now and then, it’s good to just let go and indulge in the craving. And who knows, maybe like me, you’ll find a compromise for that thing you’ve been resisting and it will rock your world.  🙂
