Pet Peeve #9: Hey Beautiful

Since deciding a few weeks ago to re-post my online dating profile and get back into the whole dating game, this pet peeve has been bugging me more and more lately.

The simple term of endearment “hello beautiful,” and the variations such as “gorgeous, darling, baby, and sweetie,” when coming from a total stranger is something that I can’t help but feel a little creeped out when part of  an e-mail or message.

Maybe if those words weren’t the opening line of the message I wouldn’t feel as strongly about those phrases/words, but when that’s the most creative thing someone can think of to start a conversation it makes me wonder if they are serious or just copying and pasting a standard pickup message to every woman they’ve contacted.

Like most women (I assume this is true) I enjoy being given compliments when they are sincere, but as the opening line it just feels cheap and cheesy. Also, I’d much rather have that first message address me by name… which isn’t hard to figure out since it’s right there in my username.

Once we’ve actually met in person and had a real conversation, I can see some of those things being ok, especially if an actual relationship of some sort is forming. An example of this would be that I have a few friends who will say “hey babe,” when on a call, in person, or in a message and I have no problem with that term because of the way it’s being said and since it’s coming from someone I actually know.

I’m sure that I’m not the only one out there who gets a little peeved when hearing or seeing these statements coming from virtual strangers, so if there’s a certain word or phrase out there that bugs the snot out of you, please go ahead and share it with me in the comments! 🙂
