The First Time

Warning: The following tale is not for the weak, and Mom- please don’t read this… You’ve been warned. Proceed with caution.

It was a hot and sticky July night in the city. A haze surrounded the streetlights and the pavement steamed from the heat of the day wafting into the night air as we made our way to our final stop for the evening.  An eerie glow poured from the window as we braved the throng of people to make our way to the front.

I had been anticipating this moment for a long, long time. I had never been to a place like this before. So unique, so much a part of the culture in the city.

A thrill of excitement and apprehension filled my being as I stood there in awe of the decision which lay before me.  Should I or shouldn’t I? What if it doesn’t live up to the hype? Am I going to be disappointed? I just had to take the plunge.  I had to. When would I be given this opportunity again?

A small bead of perspiration dribbled down my back as I waited for my chance. My mouth was dry from the fear of my request being denied and I almost walked away.

But I had come this far already, and there was no turning back, so I went for it.

Shyly, I walked over and made my request.  There was a moment of crippling fear as I described in detail what I wanted. What if I can’t have it? What do I do then? But a smile spread over his face and he quickly went to work meeting my request.

My eyes lit up when I saw it. It was larger than I thought. The first taste was creamy and sweet and had me instantly wanting more. A small sigh of satisfaction escaped my lips as I went back again and again. All too quickly it was over. It was my first time, and I was hooked.

The hype and anxiety were well worth the wait.

I immediately wanted to go back for another round, but knew I shouldn’t. I didn’t want to seem too greedy.

Ted Drewes makes a mean concrete.
