Foursquare: Adding a New Venue

A few weeks ago I finally decided to go ahead and set up my Foursquare account, and start using the app.

Part of my reasoning for using this handy program is to track places I’ve eaten, so I can add them to my restaurant mapping guide I mentioned a while back. So far, I’ve visited a few places, but have mostly put off further work on the restaurant map project for right now. I’m hoping that my logging visits with Foursquare will let me see trends of which areas I visit most frequently, and what areas need more focus.

Since setting up the program I’ve noticed some friends check in at places they’ve created (home, work, etc), and up until a couple of days ago could not figure out how to add a new place, no matter how hard I tried to follow the “simple” directions listed on the help page.

Once I finally figured it out on my own (just by playing around in the app), I decided to take some screen shots from my phone and create a visual walk through for anyone else out there who has been struggling with this same issue. My images are all from my iPhone, but I imagine it’s the same or a very similar process for Android users.

And, since these are all screen shots, credit for the images goes to the app creators and the fine folks at Apple (I think).

Step 1 (after opening Foursquare): Press the “Check-in” symbol.

Step 2: Type in the name of what you are searching for, or what you want to name the place.

Step 3: Scroll to the bottom of the list and press the “add this place” button.

Step 4: Select a category for the place.

Step 5: Select a sub-category.

Step 6: Add specific address if desired, or just double check that the category was added correctly, then save.

Step 7: Check-in at the new place you just added.

Super easy to do, and I have no clue why it seemed so hard trying to figure this out from the official instructions.

If you look closely, you can see I did blank out the specific location of the place I added, since it was the house of a friend and I wanted to protect their privacy.

If you use Foursquare, let me know if this was helpful. Also, what was the reason you decided to start using the app, or how has it been fun/beneficial to you?
