Would You… Dress Up to Watch a Movie?

With summer quickly approaching, my list of movies that I want to see seems to grow on a daily basis.

Right now the list has about 14 movies coming out this year that I would like to see on the big screen, although I’m sure not all of them will make the final cut.

Several of the movies I plan on watching are sure to draw huge crowds (Catching Fire, The Hobbit part 2, Iron Man 3, Man of Steel, and Star Trek Into Darkness to name a few), and I wouldn’t be surprised to see fellow movie goers dressed up for those films.

One movie that a co-worker and I have been talking about quite a bit is The Great Gatsby, and several times we’ve touched on the idea of dressing up in Gatsby era clothing when this film releases… even though we probably won’t actually go see the movie together. I love old fashioned clothing styles, and think it might actually be fun to get all dolled up in a vintage dress and see a movie with a friend dressed in similar attire to that period.

I’ve already decided to see Gatsby on the big screen, and I hope that Baz Luhrmann’s directing is as fantastic as it was in Moulin Rouge, which is still one of my favorite movies (I remember dragging a group of friends to see it with me to celebrate my 16th birthday). What I haven’t decided yet is if I’ll actually go through with dressing up for it, and then trying to convince a friend or a few friends to dress up and go with me. If that happens, I imagine making it into an event of sorts, with a nice dinner or drinks/desserts either before or after the movie.

Have you or would you ever dress up as a character or in period clothing to watch a movie in the theater? And if so, what movie/character would you be willing to dress up for?

  1. As much as I love movies, I don’t think I would ever wear something to a movie that I wouldn’t normally wear in public, but I would be all for seeing Gatsby in a nice suit as long as themed drinks were involved before the movie.

Hopefully it will be at the Moolah then, as I think they normally cater the bar menu to match the movie being shown. Or I’m sure any number of bars/restaurants can be found that can make suitable Gatsby themed drinks. 🙂

I would totally dress up for a movie! (I dressed up for the Season premiere of Downton Abby and it is a tv show) Maybe not like a hobbit or a trekkie, but definitely for something classy like the Great Gatsby. Wish I lived closer to see it with you, I have a great hat you could wear. 🙂
